Somia Siddiq

Somia is a Solicitor in the Family Department and joined ITN in April 2018. She has over 12 years’ experience and has practiced exclusively in Children’s Law. She has advised a range of clients in Public and Private Law matters.

She regularly acts for children, parents and family members in highly complex cases involving non-accidental injuries, physical abuse, sexual abuse and radicalisation. In recent years she has represented parties in proceedings under the Inherent Jurisdiction of the High Court for permission to deprive a child of their liberty and is well versed in the emerging area of case law in this area. Somia is well known for being an empathetic and committed lawyer. She is well respected by her colleagues, clients and peers. She regularly undertakes her own advocacy at all levels of court.

Somia is a member of the Law Society Children Panel and regularly accepts instructions from Children’s Guardians. She also has experience of representing children separately.

Somia is the Secretary and member of the Executive Committee of the Association of Lawyers for Children (ALC). She is a member of the Equality Diversity and Inclusion and Legal Aid Sub-Committees. She frequently represents the ALC at key forums and meetings making representations of behalf of the ALC membership. She is a member of the Cafcass Learning and Improvement Board which has been formed to consider the recommendations of the Expert Panel on Assessing Risk of Harm to Children and Parents in Private Law Children Cases.

  • Re M (Children) [2019] EWCA Civ 1364

Acted for the Appellant Father on an appeal relating to the disclosure of material in family proceedings to the Police.

  • Re B (Secure Accommodation Order) [2019] EWCA Civ 2025

Acted for the ALC who were invited to intervene in this important appeal. The Judgement considered the law relating to secure accommodation orders and updated the test in relation to the making of such orders.

  • Representing a child by his Children’s Guardian in complex ongoing care proceedings heard in the High Court where the court considered the making of an order to deprive the child of his liberty in a long term residential placement.
  • Representing a Mother in care proceedings where the court considered cross-border issues and legal framework of an order being made in Portugal. Successfully argued that the children should be placed with their maternal grandmother in Portugal as opposed to long term foster care.
