In that role, we have been at the forefront of uncovering the misuse of Facebook. This includes the manipulation of feeds and the misuse of private personal data. We are now aware that Facebook will send each of its 2.2 billion users messages titled ‘Protecting Your Information’ with a link to the apps which give third party access.
For those people whose details may have been shared with Cambridge Analytica, the message will include the following paragraph:
“We have banned the app 'This is Your Digital Life’ which one of your friends used Facebook to log into. We did this because the website may have misused some of your Facebook information by sharing it with a company called Cambridge Analytica.”
Ravi Naik, head of data rights at ITN Solicitors and the solicitor behind the claims against Cambridge Analytica, called for Facebook to take steps to ensure accountability for the breach:
Facebook has known about this breach since at least 2015. Taking steps to advise those effected, some three years later and following public pressure, may be too little, too late. Facebook should now take urgent steps towards accountability. An urgent first step would be to properly compensate those effected.
